Spiceworks Study Shows that UC Usage in SMB is Set to Double in the Next Year

A closer look at what unified communications has to offer SMB Small and midsize organizations are turning in increasing numbers to unified communications (UC) as they find UC solutions can benefit their businesses in a variety of ways.

A recent Spiceworks survey of nearly 250 IT pros in SMBs in the U.S. shows that close to a fifth of respondents have implemented a UC solution – and this number is set to double in the next year. What’s bringing a traditionally enterprise solution like UC to SMBs across a wide range of industries? Namely a long list of benefits to the IT department, to the users, and to the organization as a whole.

The majority of IT pros using or planning to use UC state that there are clear advantages, specifically:

  • 87% state faster communication
  • 76% state higher employee productivity
  • 70% state better use of mobile technology
  • 67% state better collaboration between employees, partners, vendors, and customers

And the time is ripe for unified communications. Think of all the moving parts a company might need in order to facilitate communication among employees, customers, and business partners: instant messaging, video conferencing, voicemail, email, text messaging, web conferencing, conference calling, collaboration, fax, presence information, and, of course, wired and wireless telephony. And the future will only become more complex as employees use more and more devices and leverage multiple ways to interact with each other and their clients to get their work done.

Meeting these challenges certainly isn’t unique to enterprise organizations. In fact, it may be felt even more profoundly in SMBs, where IT pros are tasked on a daily basis to do more with less. Today’s UC solutions are bringing much-needed relief to these IT pros, helping to minimize both the costs and management headaches associated with using multiple offerings to address the organization’s diverse communication needs. But to be effective in SMBs, the research shows that the UC solution has to be easy to use, be easy to implement, and offer management visibility.

The goal of this paper is to help IT pros understand how SMBs are using UC today, as well as provide insights from industry experts and IT pros themselves as to the value UC can deliver. In addition, it outlines important questions companies need to answer when evaluating UC solutions and selecting a vendor for their company.
