AIPAC Case Study
AIPAC leverages ShoreTel Mobility to cost effectively integrate iPhones and iPads into its telephony infrastructure
Lobbying organization expands ShoreTel functionality
American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) U.S. staff work with U.S. leaders to protect and strengthen ties between the U.S. and Israel. AIPAC uses a ShoreTel business VoIP telephony system to support approximately 500 phones across the U.S. and in Israel.
Integration of mobile devices
Based on the success AIPAC experienced with its ShoreTel implementation, it decided to turn to ShoreTel again when it started rolling out Apple iPhones and iPads to its employees.
ShoreTel enables secure, simple, and cost-effective integrated mobile
ShoreTel Mobility enabled AIPAC to securely, simply, and cost-effectively integrate its iPhones and iPads with its existing enterprise communications and applications infrastructure. The mobile solution lets AIPAC employees access the full suite of mobile UC tools from any location using their iOS mobile devices.
“Our ShoreTel telephony system has been an allaround extraordinary solution for us,” says Chaim Yudkowsky, chief information officer at AIPAC. “ShoreTel Mobility has been extraordinary, too. It extends all the features we have on our desktop phones to the iPhones and iPads we rolled out to our employees.”
ShoreTel Mobility makes it easy for employees to take advantage of their iPhones and iPads by leveraging extension dialing, transfers, calendar integration, call holding, enterprise presence, instant messaging, and full access to the AIPAC phone directory while traveling. “ShoreTel Mobility ease of use for our users has been outstanding. Unlike other solutions, ShoreTel Mobility doesn’t require rocket science,” says Yudkowsky.
Reduced telephony costs are a bonus
A major benefit that ShoreTel Mobility provides AIPAC is the solution’s ability to reduce telecom costs. By leveraging VoIP over WiFi and cellular data services (i.e., 3G and 4G), AIPAC has been able to reduce international roaming charges.
Whether it’s WiFi, cellular, or voice, ShoreTel Mobility automatically selects the best available network in terms of optimal cost, call quality, and coverage. It can also drastically reduce international direct dial charges from AIPAC’s mobile devices by routing calls through its enterprise PBX, providing least-cost routing.
“The cost advantages of ShoreTel Mobility in terms of international calls are amazing,” says Yudkowsky. “Mobile carriers charge about $2.50 per minute for a call from Israel to the U.S. When you have multiple travelers who need to call in, you can imagine that the cost can be quite high. ShoreTel Mobility significantly reduces that cost as our staff travels in Israel. Now they can stay connected to any place in the U.S. at simple data roaming costs or less, even free, if they have a WiFi connection.”
Ease of use and implementation help IT manage the system
One of the nice advantages of ShoreTel Mobility is the ease of implementation and management. “Other telephony providers make it so difficult in terms of implementation and additional hardware,” Yudkowsky says. “The primary role of IT shouldn’t be to manage a humongous telecommunications infrastructure like Cisco and others require. As a ShoreTel customer, you experience real ease of use. After that, all your future telephony choices become a no-brainer.”

To further simplify the implementation, AIPAC took advantage of the services of Nortec, a premier system integrator and infrastructure leader with offices in Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania. Even though AIPAC’s in-house IT team has the capability to handle the majority of issues in-house, it recognized a number of advantages in leveraging the integrator’s telecom and mobility expertise. One of these advantages, as Yudkowsky states, was the fact that “it was more efficient and cost effective than to handle the project ourselves.”
