SUNNYVALE, CA, July 9, 2008 - ShoreTel, Inc., (NASDAQ: SHOR), a leading provider of Pure IP Unified Communications (UC) solutions, today announced it has received two patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. US Patent 7,379,540 covers server backup capabilities across distributed IP telephony systems, increasing the survivability and fault tolerance of managing and routing voice calls over the IP network (LAN/WAN). US Patent 7,386,114 covers techniques for collecting and sharing information when multiple switches or servers are involved in a call.

"As converged networks and technologies grow more complex and applications become more bandwidth-intensive, organizations are facing new business challenges that require the assurance of more consistent, reliable communications across highly distributed infrastructures," said Ed Basart, CTO, ShoreTel. "Today's patent announcements are a testament to ShoreTel's continued commitment to enabling world-class business communications through technology innovations and intellectual property that tackle the need for high-availability IP telephony systems that improve collaboration and productivity of today's enterprises."

The patented technologies are part of ShoreTel's UC system - a completely integrated system that scales seamlessly from 10 to tens of thousands of users. ShoreTel's unique architecture, which allows call processing to be distributed across multiple sites, switches, and servers, pulls information together from many sources to present call details for applications such as call accounting. Independent of device or location, ShoreTel solutions can always be relied on to work smoothly and reliably. For example, branch offices of an enterprise face survivability challenges with internal and external telephony communication services during network failures or when connectivity is lost. When this happens, the ShoreTel voicemail system manages messages for users connected to servers that are unreachable. Once network operations are restored, the voicemail system forwards any messages to the proper servers so they may be retrieved.
