SUNNYVALE, CA, September 27, 2000 - Shoreline Communications, the leading provider of enterprise-class IP voice communication systems, today announced that Circa Communications will partner to deliver standards-based IP phones that will be interoperable with the Shoreline IP voice platform.

Circa's phone, which will be based on the industry-standard MEGACO protocol, will be developed in cooperation with Shoreline to ensure business quality, end-to-end voice solutions.

"IP-based telephones are another important access point to converged IP voice and data communications networks, and will be useful in addressing certain application requirements," said John Fazio, president and CEO of Shoreline Communications. "As customers begin pilot deployment of these new devices, they will expect the same level of voice quality and reliability as they enjoy today. The new standards-based phone from Circa will meet and exceed this requirement."

Standards-based Access Devices

Shoreline's commitment is to provide its customers with the ability to connect any standards-based voice terminal device to the Shoreline IP voice system. "Our partnership with Circa will expand an IT organization's choice to include standards-based IP phones along with off-the-shelf analog phones and emerging IP softphones" explained Fazio. "As the market evolves, we will likely see a variety of new devices used to access voice services on an IP network. Our intent is to provide customers with the option of using virtually any standards-based, voice-enabled device - depending on their unique application requirements."

"Standards are critical to the success of converged networks", said Phil Holland, President and CTO of Circa Communications. "Shoreline has been working with Circa to enable customers to move beyond proprietary digital telephones and focus on standards-based, cost-effective next generation IP end points. Customers will enjoy a new generation of applications that leverage a telephone with 150 or more MIPS of processing power, 100 Mbit/s network connections and a display approximately the size of a Palm Pilot."

As the deployment of IP-based telephones expands, Shoreline and Circa will deliver to customers the following benefits:

  • Single-connection/multi-call appearance telephone applications
  • Open, standards protocol support - interoperable with multiple vendors' platforms
  • Architecture based on simplicity - easily installed by users
  • A software-only upgrade for Shoreline customers to support IP phones

The award-winning Shoreline IP Voice Communications System is based on the company's Distributed Internet Voice Architecture (DIVA) software - a standards-based architecture that leverages ShoreGear IP voice switches to distribute voice communications intelligence throughout the network. For enterprise customers, the result is a highly reliable solution that can be easily managed as a single, integrated system - even with users spread across dozens of remote locations.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing and availability for Circa's IP phone for the Shoreline platform will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2000.
