LONDON, UK, October 28, 2008 - ShoreTel, Inc., (NASDAQ: SHOR), a leading provider of Pure IP Unified Communications (UC) solutions, today announced that Richard Huish College has selected ShoreTel's IP PBX with integrated Unified Communications (UC) system to transform communications by making staff accessible to colleagues and parents, while maintaining full control of how they are contacted. The new ShoreTel UC system went live over the school summer holidays in time for the start of the academic year.

Richard Huish College, a leading sixth form college in Taunton, Somerset, serves the South West of England and was ranked as the fourth top college in the UK for A-Level results in 2007. When the legacy phone system at the campus began reaching its end of life, the college's IT department selected the ShoreTel UC system over several other vendors' products because of its flexibility and reliability. The ShoreTel UC system enables staff to log and use their number from any phone, provides the receptionists with real-time presence information on staff availability, and offers a high level of resilience against failure through the unique and easy to manage distributed architecture.

"With staff rarely in one place as they move between lessons, it was very important to have a phone system which provided the flexibility to allow them to be contactable," commented Bill Perry, IT Services Manager at Richard Huish College. "With the ShoreTel UC system each user has their own phone number and voicemail box, which they can access from any phone or even via e-mail. Combined with other features, such as its minimal environmental impact and presence and integration with Outlook, we expect the system to make a huge difference in improving both internal and external communications at the college."

Richard Huish College understood that IP telephony and UC technology had matured significantly since the last time it reviewed its phone system, and that it was now able to offer the reliability of a traditional PBX with the flexibility and productivity tools the college needs. With the assistance of ShoreTel EMEA Partner of the Year, Solar Communications, the college evaluated a number of systems, including Cisco and Avaya, and selected ShoreTel as it was the easiest to install and maintain, most resilient, and feature-rich. After an on-site comparative trial with a cross section of college staff, ShoreTel was also selected as the easiest UC system to use. College IT staff is planning to use the ShoreTel's open API to develop some key links to existing databases that will help further communication enhancements right into the classroom.

"Unified Communications is no longer the reserve of high tech companies. The education sector, led by colleges such as Richard Huish, is now seeing UC as a powerful way to help teachers become more accessible, while enabling them to maintain control of how they manage their communications, and allowing them to focus on the most important thing - teaching," commented Mark Swendsen, Managing Director EMEA at ShoreTel. "

The 338-user ShoreTel deployment at Richard Huish College includes:

  • ShorePhone IP115, IP230, IP560 and IP265 Colour-screen phones
  • ShoreGear 90 / 90BRI and ShoreGear E1 switches
  • ShoreWare Personal Call Manager and Operator Call Manager software
  • ShoreTel Voice Mail and Auto Attendant
