Report: Businesses Need to Mobilize Their Apps

As workers increasingly embrace mobile devices, companies are struggling to deploy mobile applications to accommodate them.

In a new report, 87 percent of 310 CIOs surveyed said their employees want more access to enterprise data and applications on their mobile devices. The CIOs recognized the efficiency gains from mobility, and said they expected that, on average, a 36 percent increase in productivity across their businesses if key enterprise apps were mobilized.

But concerns about cost, complexity and security are delaying full deployment of enterprise apps on mobile devices, according to the survey of IT decision-makers in the U.K. and U.S. by Mobile Helix, an enterprise application and data security platform provider.

Only an average of 22 percent of business apps are accessible from mobile devices, despite the fact that 86 percent of companies deploy standard web applications, and 53 percent of enterprise apps are now browser-based, presenting an opportunity to mobilize relatively easily and cost-effectively, the report said.

The CIOs cited development costs (65 percent), security concerns (63 percent), and support and maintenance costs (48 percent) as the chief impediments to deployment.

Matt Bancroft, Co-Founder and COO for Mobile Helix, said companies are falling behind users’ expectations.

“Users expect critical data and applications to be available on any device and in any context, both in mobile and fixed environments, in the way that is most familiar and convenient to them,” Bancroft said in a statement.

“The current approach to mobility is limiting the market – enterprises are now looking for solutions which will allow them to develop and deliver apps to their employees simply and cost effectively.” Bancroft added. “Companies already have the infrastructure and skills to mobilize, deliver and support enterprise applications in a cost-effective way, while still ensuring enterprise-grade security. Every device platform on the market today has a high performance, HTLM5-compliant engine. By taking this HTML5 browser-based approach, corporate IT can build a unified applications platform that extends across devices of all shapes and sizes, without compromise in functionality, performance, or security.”

While more effective measures are developed to mobilize appd, ShoreTel Mobility has taken steps to ensure mobile apps are secure and cost-effective.
