Making Interactions Magically Simple

Arthur C. Clarke famously said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. That certainly seems to be the case when it comes to communications.

Admittedly, it’s taken thousands of years to get to the point where human beings can talk to anyone anywhere on the planet, any time they want to. But, the fact that we can actually do it is really nothing short of magical.

Where Are We and Where Are We Going?

Today everyone is on the move. Take Hong Kong, for example. According to the GfK Download Tech Trends 2016 report, it’s the most connected place in the world. The city ranks 2nd in the world in terms of average connection speed. And Hongkongers are taking advantage of that speed in huge numbers – at least 68% of them own both smartphones and tablets.

Hong Kong may be a little ahead of the curve, but the communications revolution is having a dramatic impact all over the world – professionally as well as personally. The new workplace is a personalized and highly connected environment, with knowledge and data accessible anytime and, increasingly, anywhere!

It is really happening. Employees in “balanced workplaces” already spend an average of 20% less time in their office, with voice and video replacing in-person meetings, and digital document sharing enabling people to work on-the-go.

According to, the remote workforce has grown by 103% since 2005. And mobile workers are set to account for 42% of the global workforce by 2020.

Keeping It Brilliantly Simple

However, in the drive to create new capabilities, we’ve moved from ‘people to people’ communication to ‘people to machine,’ and now ‘machine to machine’. The potential benefits are virtually limitless. However, there is also a possible downside for organisations, where ever-increasing levels of complexity might actually hinder rather than facilitate communications.

By the way, Nemertes Research is now calling that “total cost of operations” instead of “total cost of ownership.” And Nemertes might know a thing or two.

Earlier this year the research firm released a report that evaluated three unified communications scenarios: companies with 100, 750, and 1,500 employees. In each case, ShoreTel offered the greatest costs savings and lowest overall cost over a five-year period. That was compared to the industry average and various providers for both on-premises and cloud.

One reason for this is that organisations that use ShoreTel have to devote fewer IT staff to managing the solution. Whether it’s cloud or hybrid, ShoreTel’s actual subscription costs are also lower, and over a few years, those savings add up significantly.

This brilliant simplicity is a compelling argument that growing numbers of organisations are taking to heart. Today over two million minutes of voice calls and over five billion digital interactions take place every day over ShoreTel systems.

That’s impressive. And while Clarke was an undoubted visionary – he proposed the idea of a geostationary communications satellite way back in 1945 – I don’t think he had any idea where technology would really take us. However, I am sure he would agree that the results have been simply magical.
