The Evolution Continues – Cloud Communication

Once upon a time all enterprises used circuit-switched telephone networks with local operators manually switching cables to connect to inter-office numbers. As technology continued its march forward, businesses established the standard of deploying telephony systems via software installed on hardware appliances within company closets.

The information superhighway heyday brought forth the ability to connect across Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, which then morphed into the voice over IP business phone system network we are familiar with today, along with a plethora of additional tools to interact alongside voice. Cloud communications continues the evolution.

While cloud storage and service is not new phenomena, unified communications as a service (UCaaS) is a relatively new paradigm. And while CIOs continue to name security as a concern, this has not slowed the adoption of cloud services.  According to Synergy Research UCaaS subscribers will be only 8 percent of the total enterprise IP telephony ports shipped in 2014. However, there is a forecasted growth of 68 percent in UCaaS business suite (of private and public cloud) subscribers by 2017.

Regardless of where the closet housing your data lives, whether on-premises in the basement of your corporate building or in a data center located near Dallas, Texas, the primary objective of a communications system is to disseminate the information needed to run an enterprise of any kind. In most industries, from aeronautics to zoology, protecting pertinent information is a top priority.

We asked 1,200 people including CEOs, owners, CIOs, IT directors and managers who run their company’s unified communication system (comprising both on-premises and cloud solutions) how concerned they were about issues when it came to deploying communications system in the cloud.


Given the current prevalence of premises systems, many enterprises are wary of the unknown dangers cloud communications could introduce into the fold. Survey respondents were asked to rank their concerns on a scale of 1-5 increasing trepidation. Overall, concerns averaged in the mid-range.

As you can see from the survey results, downtime, performance, and cost led the list, proving that performance is top of mind for an enterprise communications system. Yet a wide variety of security snafus were all ranked as reasons for concern. It does appear that trust is still prevalent as abuse of services and malicious insiders were topics most often designated as something to be very unconcerned with.
