According to Jessica Brack, program director for UNC Executive Development at Kenan-Flagler Business School, millennials will make up 46 percent of the workforce by 2020 - less than 6 years from now.

This is something that companies will need to keep in mind as they reconsider their telecommunications capabilities. Millennials grew up around computers and generally have a great grasp on how to use them - almost to a fault. If team members feel that their employer's solutions are not in-line with modern needs and productivity styles, they may turn to unapproved alternatives with weak security encryptions - or to another job altogether.

Effective unified communications systems in the cloud are the appropriate answer to this issue. Staffers in this age are, for example, expecting the opportunity to work from home when they so choose. This is not entitlement - this is a natural step for mobile-minded employees. Working from home is not a major demand as long as the right networks are in place. Presence and collaboration are both still essentials in the modern world, but thanks to the cloud, it is possible to obtain them without being in the physical workplace. According to Brack, this is something that organizations should welcome with open arms, as it presents new opportunities for innovation.

"By all accounts, millennials are unlike preceding generations," Brack wrote. "They view the world differently and redefined the meaning of success, personally and professionally. In some cases, this has led to misunderstanding among the different generations co-existing in today's workplace. Increasingly, however, business leaders are realizing this generation's unique competencies and perspective, and employers are looking for ways to harness their strengths."

One such way to do this undoubtedly through unified communications hosted in the cloud. The way that people work is changing, and rather than try to champion old methods that no longer apply in the present day, it is important to embrace new developments that make sense in modern context.
